Sweet Valley High: 40 and Fabulous

Growing up, my childhood was marked by constant relocations, making books my refuge. Often the awkward newcomer in classrooms filled with unfamiliar faces, I would rush home to immerse myself in the company of characters like Ramona Quimby and Sally J. Freedman. As I matured (read: after developing curves), I discovered the glamorous world of Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, the stunning blonde twins of Sweet Valley High, and let’s be honest: we became inseparable BFFS4EVA.

Thanks to Francine Pascal and her team of ghostwriters, I always had an escape into the picturesque (read: picture-perfect) California town of Sweet Valley. Sure, the descriptions of the twins (you know the drill: perfect size 6 figures, heart-shaped faces, flowing blonde hair, and sparkling blue eyes) were repetitive, and the plots were often ludicrous and over-the-top, but that didn’t stop countless girls like me from voraciously reading through the extensive series. And admit it: you adored the cover art and secretly had a crush on Todd Wilkins too.

The series concluded with Elizabeth and Jessica in their twenties, and honestly, I feel a bit robbed. I need to know that the twin beauties are 40 and thriving in Sweet Valley. Is Elizabeth still close with her friend, Enid? Is Bruce Patman still as obnoxious as ever? Are Ned and Alice Wakefield enjoying their roles as grandparents? Fortunately, I have some ideas if anyone is looking for a ghostwriter for “Sweet Valley High: 40 and Fabulous.”

Where Are They Now?

Elizabeth Wakefield now operates the Wakefield Weekly, a publication focused on keeping parents informed about the latest trends in parenting. She’s the president of the PTA, dons pearls, and enjoys precisely one martini each evening at 5 p.m.—with one olive. She has two children with her Israeli husband, Avi, whom she met while covering the Middle Eastern crisis during her journalism career.

Jessica Wakefield has collected stamps from 32 countries and her fashion brand, JW, Inc., is flourishing. She discards men as easily as she changes hair products, sending frantic texts to Elizabeth while jet-setting around the globe. Now a perfect size 2, she has dyed her once-wavy blonde hair black and cut it short. Currently, she’s in Tibet seeking inner peace while playfully annoying the local monks.

Todd Wilkins resides just a few streets away from Elizabeth and has never quite moved on from their breakup. Once a high school basketball star, he is now married to a perfectly polished debutante and secretly gazes at Elizabeth’s photo after a few drinks on Saturday nights. He spots her at soccer games, wishing he had never let her slip away. Elizabeth is currently considering a restraining order.

Enid Rollins remains Elizabeth’s closest friend, embracing a hippy, organic lifestyle. With six kids, she runs the website “Rollin’ in Organic,” where she sells cloth diapers handcrafted on her own loom. Enid uses natural deodorant and specializes in holistic yoga, although her house is often chaotic and carries a faint odor of marijuana.

Bruce Patman has gained weight and has been bald since he was 25. Having lost his wealth, dignity, and charm in his 30s, he now deals blackjack at the local casino, driving a dilapidated Toyota Camry and reminiscing about his lost black Porsche.

Lila Fowler has become famous for being famous. A social media influencer since the early 2000s, she reigns as the Queen of Retweets. Living in Los Angeles, she mingles with Hollywood elites and shares her glamorous life with 40 million Instagram followers, partying alongside her partner, Anastasia, and their two Pomeranians.

Winston Egbert launched a tech company from his garage and sold it for a staggering $10 billion. He’s married to a supermodel and rarely returns Jessica’s calls, choosing instead to meet Elizabeth for weekly cocktail hours in Sweet Valley.

Cara Walker had a scandalous affair with Ned Wakefield in the early ’90s. After Alice kicked Ned out of their perfectly decorated home, he proposed to Cara, who accepted his four-carat diamond ring, drained his bank account, and vanished. Ned now resides at a Motel Six, spending his days engaging in vague social media posts.

Jeffrey French comforted Alice after Ned’s affair, and they now operate a successful bed and breakfast in Vermont. Alice frequently visits Elizabeth and tolerates Ned once a year during the Wakefield Christmas gathering.

The Droids, once a chart-topping band in 1987, have faded into obscurity. They now perform regularly at the casino where Bruce Patman works. Lead singer Dana has her sights set on Bruce, who happily buys her cheap drinks in hopes of taking her home.

I truly believe there’s potential here. Hey, Francine, give me a call, okay? I’m eager to expand on my vision for “Sweet Valley High: The Grandparent Diaries.”
