Parenting is a demanding role. You’re in a constant state of alertness. Sleep is often elusive, and while vacations exist, they typically come with more challenges than relaxation. It’s no surprise that the temptation of a glass of wine can be quite strong. Having a drink occasionally is completely acceptable, but to ensure moderation, consider these helpful indicators.
You might find it’s time to pour yourself a glass of wine if:
- The total minutes you managed to nap divided by the number of children under five is less than 60.
- You meet the Poop Rule of Twos: In any given hour, you have either (1) been in direct contact with poop for at least two minutes; (2) discussed poop for at least four minutes; or (3) thought about poop for at least eight minutes.
- Your child has had a time-out, requiring you to physically hold the door shut to prevent any escapes.
- It’s a snow day or a sick day. For those in warmer climates, a little rain counts too. Let’s also be empathetic to our little ones, as even a runny nose or a splinter can qualify as “sick.” A trip to the ER definitely grants you wine privileges for the week.
- “Mommy!” or “Mommy?” has been exclaimed 27 times or more in the last half hour.
- You’re in the process of making dinner. Quesadillas, mac & cheese, or anything with cheese qualifies. Cheese sticks? Pour that wine!
- You had to go to work today. Working from home certainly counts, and being a stay-at-home parent is absolutely a job too.
- You’re unloading the dishwasher but can’t find the energy to put the wine glasses away.
- You need more corks for a craft project.
- You require inspiration for a cork-related craft project.
- There’s an open bottle of wine waiting for you. Or perhaps you forgot to open one the night before, which is still a valid reason.
- It’s after 5 p.m. in a major city within five time zones from you. On weekends, don’t fret; as long as your bubbly has bubbles, you’re in the clear.
So there you have it. Hopefully, these signs are as effective for you as they have been for many others navigating the challenges of parenthood.
