Surprising Moments from My New Mom Journey

Eight years into this chaotic adventure called motherhood, where each day seems to be more hectic and exhausting than the last, I can hardly fathom a time when I had the energy to track every detail of pee and poop. This reflection has led me to think about other unbelievable things I did as a new mom.

I can’t believe I kept a poop log. Seriously, it sounds ridiculous now! I’m inherently anxious (a trait I may have inherited from my own mother), yet nowadays, I can’t even remember to jot down a grocery list, let alone document diaper details.

I also can’t believe I managed night feedings. By the time my second son arrived, I was a complete mess during those late-night sessions. My husband would often find me dozing off with a baby nursing away, sprawled out all over the house. Now, on a good night, I relish about eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, and the thought of waking up to tend to a hungry baby seems utterly absurd.

Remembering those early days, I can’t fathom how I woke up before dawn every single day. Sleep has become a rare and cherished luxury in our household. My little ones actually celebrate the arrival of the weekend when they don’t have to get up at 6:30 a.m. for school. It seems unimaginable that I once found myself finger painting at 4:30 a.m.

I also can’t believe I took the time to prepare baby food. While I still think making baby food is fantastic (and buying it is just as acceptable), I can’t figure out how I found the time. These days, between hockey practices and other activities, a soft pretzel from the snack bar sometimes counts as dinner. If I want to coax my Kindergartner out of the car at morning drop-off, I often promise him an “all snack” dinner that must include a cupcake. Just last night, I’m not even sure either of my kids had a proper dinner! It’s hard to imagine that I once peeled, steamed, pureed, and froze organic apples, pears, and sweet potatoes in cute little containers.

And let’s not forget the portable potty I kept in my car. There are countless aspects of motherhood that no one prepares you for, like the grueling, prolonged journey of potty training. It can stretch anywhere from a few days to several years, all while your child insists on using the toilet at home or the tiny potty stashed in the back of our Volkswagen Passat parked in the preschool lot.
