Sitting volleyball player Lila Morgan had just settled into her hotel room in Tokyo when she decided it was time to take a pregnancy test. With the Paralympic Games around the corner, she and her partner had been trying for their second child, and after a year-long delay in the games, her intuition nudged her to bring along some tests.
“I had a feeling, so I thought, ‘Why not check while I’m here?’” Lila shared with us. “I took the test before breakfast and rushed back to see the results before practice—I was pregnant!” The joy was overwhelming, especially after having previously endured an ectopic pregnancy that left her uncertain about conceiving again.
After a celebratory video call with her partner, Lila rushed to tell her coaches. With the Team USA medical staff confirming her pregnancy and giving her the green light, she faced her next hurdle: competing on a global stage in her first trimester. “I was just so thankful to be pregnant and to have this experience with my little one,” Lila expressed. “I did start feeling morning sickness right before our finals match, but I managed to push through it.”
The women’s sitting volleyball team ultimately triumphed, clinching the gold medal against their rivals. Lila, who was born with a clubfoot, has been a proud member of the Team USA sitting volleyball squad since 2010 and is a seasoned Paralympian.
