The trial of Derek Chauvin, the ex-police officer charged with the death of George Floyd last summer, is currently taking place in Minneapolis. On Tuesday, a number of witnesses provided testimony, but one particular account stood out as especially poignant—a 9-year-old girl who witnessed the tragic event.
The young witness shared that she saw Chauvin disregard emergency responders’ pleas to lift his knee off Floyd’s neck moments before Floyd’s death last May. Although she was not named in court, she recounted her experience of seeing Chauvin maintain pressure on Floyd’s neck for an agonizing nine minutes. After purchasing snacks from a nearby store with her cousin, 18-year-old Darnell, she described witnessing “an officer put his knee on the neck of George Floyd” as they exited the shop.
In her testimony to prosecutor Jerry Blackwell, the girl recalled seeing Chauvin continue to keep his knee on Floyd’s neck even after medics arrived on the scene. “They asked him nicely to get off of him,” she said, adding that Chauvin “still stayed on him.” Eventually, after repeated requests, Chauvin complied. The young girl expressed her feelings about the incident, stating, “I was sad and kind of mad. It felt like he was stopping his breathing and it was kind of hurting him.”
Four other witnesses also took the stand on Tuesday morning, the second full day of Chauvin’s trial. Among them was Genevieve Hansen, a 27-year-old firefighter who was off-duty at the time. As she testified, her emotions were palpable and she broke down multiple times. Video footage from the scene shows her desperately urging officers to allow her to check Floyd’s pulse. She described seeing “a handcuffed man who was not moving,” with officers applying their full weight on him. She noted that Floyd’s face looked “puffy and swollen,” a result of the pressure being applied to his neck.
Hansen, identifying herself as a firefighter, attempted to assist Floyd but was denied access by the officers present. In a 911 call she made, she informed the dispatcher, “I literally watched police officers not take a pulse and not do anything to save a man.” The trial of Derek Chauvin continues this week.
