Dear Soon-to-Be Mom of Twins,

I see you there, sporting your “Double Trouble” shirt, marvelously unaware of the small patch of skin peeking out between your shirt and maternity pants. The mix of fear, joy, and fatigue in your eyes is completely understandable and, believe me, it’s the perfect mindset for preparing for twins.

Five years ago, I found myself in your shoes, desperately wishing for larger maternity clothes. It was a whirlwind of emotions—fear, excitement, and that overwhelming sense of being completely out of my depth. While no words can truly ready you for this journey, here are some hard-earned lessons from my experience:

  1. It’s Tough. Really Tough. From the moment you discover you’re expecting twins, it can feel far more challenging than with singleton pregnancies. I’m not trying to scare you but just know that when you feel overwhelmed, you are not alone.
  2. It Will Get Better. Keep pushing through; one day you will know the sound of each baby’s cry, recognize their favorite swing, and eventually enjoy uninterrupted sleep longer than 45 minutes at a stretch. It doesn’t happen immediately, but I promise, it will come.
  3. Fake It Until You Make It. This mindset can help you navigate the chaos. Take a shower, put on real pants, apply some lip gloss, or treat yourself to a little self-care. Even if it feels impossible, nurturing yourself connects you to the joy that’s waiting on the other side of this challenging phase.
  4. Marriage Takes Work. The sleep deprivation and chaos can strain even the strongest relationships. Remember to communicate, support each other, and show appreciation. Small gestures like pizza and wine can go a long way in keeping the peace.
  5. Double the Joy, Double the Mischief. Baby-proof your home the moment you see those two heartbeats during the ultrasound. Expect the unexpected—my twins were into everything before they could even walk. They’ll test your limits and your sanity, so stay vigilant and maybe keep some wine on a high shelf.
  6. Capture the Moments. Take lots of pictures. One day, you’ll look back and laugh at the wild adventures you survived.
  7. What You Really Need to Register For: Friends, babysitters, and yes, wine. These are the unsung heroes that will carry you through. Embrace their support, and don’t feel guilty for taking time for yourself.
  8. You Are a Warrior. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. People may tell you how lucky you are, but it’s okay to not feel that way all the time. You are doing an incredible job raising two little beings who rely on you for everything. Remember, it’s not a journey for the faint-hearted, but you’ve been chosen for this incredible adventure.

You are about to embark on a rewarding journey, filled with moments of joy and love. As you navigate this new chapter, know that you’re stronger than you realize, and you will emerge as a true superhero. Embrace the chaos and own that cape, you’ve got this!
