7 Reasons Why Step Aerobics Remains an Epic Workout

I still vividly recall my first step aerobics class—it was 1989, and I was a sophomore in college. One of my dorm mates waltzed into my room decked out in black spandex, an oversized tee, and some pretty stylish Avias, inviting me to join her for a high-impact aerobics class at the gym. Sure, it started at 9 p.m. and I was in my high school boyfriend’s old boxers and a tour shirt from The Dream of the Blue Turtles, but I decided to go for it.

I stacked two purple risers beneath my green step, joined the other college women, and awkwardly tried to keep up with the routines. At first, I struggled to catch the beat and had no clue what “repeater knees” meant. With time, a few classes, and some new spandex, I found my rhythm and embraced the sweat-inducing dance routines. Despite the plethora of fitness options available today—TRX, spin, interval training, kickboxing, barre—step aerobics still draws me back to the gym. Here’s why it’s still an awesome choice:

While cycling classes have become all the rage, sitting on a hard bike seat for an hour can be quite uncomfortable—not to mention the potential for chafing. No other fitness class can match the club-like vibe of step aerobics. Zumba feels too serious, and interval training leans toward boot camp intensity. So, if I commit to one class a week, I can enjoy the other six days lounging around. Win-win!

While we may no longer sport Reebok high-tops and leotards, I still enjoy donning stylish headbands (the sweatband kind) and moisture-wicking leggings. I’m still a sucker for workout attire, and thankfully, gym-to-street fashion is trendy these days.

5. No Pressure to Impress

There’s no need for me to impress anyone with complex moves like tick-tock or reverse V-steps. I’m confident enough in my skills to stick with just one riser! Plus, my joints are not what they used to be.

6. Familiarity Breeds Comfort

After over 25 years of step aerobics, I can practically anticipate the instructor’s next move. The fundamental steps—basic right, turn-step, over-the-top—are second nature, allowing me to zone out and ponder important questions, like what really happened to Joanie and Chachi.

7. Grooving Without Embarrassment

Where else can I dance like nobody’s watching—sober—and not feel self-conscious? I’m here to shake it, not just stir the soup while doing the Charleston!

I’m enthusiastic about various forms of exercise, particularly those that don’t leave me achy, keep me fit, and make me feel fantastic. I’m open to trying new workouts, but I always find my way back to step aerobics, with its energizing tunes, reliable non-slip board, and reassuring cues of “corner-to-corner knees!”
