7 Commitments I Make But Rarely Uphold

Ever since my daughter was born a year and a half ago, it’s felt like I’ve been thrown into the fast lane of a supercharged sports car. Everything is racing by, and I’m merely a passenger trying to take it all in. This time of year often inspires resolutions; however, I’m realistic about my shortcomings as a parent. Here are seven promises I intend to keep, but likely won’t:

  1. To Keep Things Tidy
My vehicle is a disaster zone, my bedding hasn’t seen a wash in ages, and my daughter’s high chair is still sticky from last night’s dinner. Honestly, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I will never be the dad who maintains a pristine home. Life is chaotic, and that’s just something I need to accept.
  2. To Ensure My Daughter Is Dressed Properly
I’m making progress, but I still forget her jacket, socks, and shoes more often than I’d like to admit. Sometimes, she tosses them aside without me noticing. I genuinely want her to be warm and comfy, but my memory seems to have been compromised by my excessive coffee consumption. At least I remember to put her pants on—so, there’s that.
  3. To Always Pack Snacks
How many times have I left the house thinking we’d be back in 30 minutes only to find ourselves out for three hours? It’s during those moments that my child starts demanding food. One takeaway lesson: always be prepared with snacks.
  4. To Appreciate Every Moment
The idea that every second with your child is filled with magic and joy is a myth. When my little one transforms into a wailing tornado, it’s not a cherished memory; it’s a test of my patience. I occasionally wonder if this means I’m not a great dad, but hey, I’m human. Perfection is neither realistic nor necessary.
  5. To Cut Back on Coffee
I recognize that excessive coffee isn’t great for me, so I aim to limit my intake to a more reasonable amount—maybe 18 cups a day? Just kidding! I can’t quit you, coffee; please don’t abandon me.
  6. To Get More Sleep
I genuinely want to prioritize sleep, knowing it’s crucial for my health and mood. Yet, finding time to rest feels impossible amidst the daily chaos. I’ll try to establish a bedtime routine, but I know I’ll soon revert to my usual five-hour nights. Coffee, once again, saves the day.
  7. To Avoid Laundry Mishaps
I can’t fathom why I struggle so much with laundry. Why can’t I just follow the tags? I promise to try harder to read them, but understanding which items need special care seems like an insurmountable challenge. My wife’s clothes will likely continue to suffer because of my laundry blunders.

So, there you have it: the promises I’ll probably fail to keep. While I might talk a good game to my colleagues, the reality is that I’m just as flawed as everyone else. But at least I’m honest about it.
