Oh, fellow parents, we’ve all seen those blog posts detailing the ups and downs of raising toddlers. And it’s true; having a toddler (or two) in the house can feel like dealing with an overly enthusiastic partygoer who just won’t leave. It’s a wild ride that sometimes deserves its own special section in the parenting manual. Yet, as chaotic as those years may seem, there will come a time when you find yourself reminiscing about the sweet simplicity of toddlerhood—a time before the teenage years kick in.
Now, don’t get me wrong; teens have their own merits. Watching your kid navigate their teenage years can be both nostalgic and enlightening, bringing back memories of your own youth. You can have real conversations with them, and they can drive, cook, and generally manage themselves. But let’s face it, parenting teens can be a whole different ballgame.
As a mother of four teens, I can confirm that while we share some great moments, the challenges are also plentiful. Just recently, I found myself circling a neighborhood in the dark, trying to locate a restaurant where my 17-year-old daughter and her friends were waiting. When she called, sounding impatient, I snapped back, “I CAN’T FIND THE RESTAURANT!” only to realize I was on speakerphone, much to the amusement of her friends. Yep, that’s me: the frazzled mom who occasionally loses her cool. But in my defense, I’m also the one who loves hosting friends over with plenty of treats in the morning.
Reflecting on my kids’ younger days, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the toddler version of my daughter. She used to wear colorful headbands and Batman underwear under her tutus, and she was obsessed with backpacks. But with those fond memories come the chaos of tantrums and constant bedtimes.
Here are five reasons why toddlers can be much easier than teens:
- SLEEPING: While parents of toddlers often find themselves deprived of sleep due to early risers, waking a teenager can feel like a scene from a horror movie. They can sleep like hibernating bears, making mornings a real challenge!
- GOOFING AROUND WITH TOILETRIES: It’s cute when a toddler gets into your makeup or bathroom supplies, often leading to adorable messes that are Instagram-worthy. But when you discover your teenager’s secret stash of lotion and tissues under their bed, it’s a whole different level of cringe.
- HOMEWORK: Toddlers have no homework, which is a blessing. Teens, on the other hand, come with an avalanche of assignments. While you might not be expected to help them directly, you’ll certainly hear plenty of complaints about it, especially when they remember last-minute projects.
- ODOR ISSUES: If you think you’re done with unpleasant smells after potty training, think again. Teenagers have their own unique scent profile—often involving copious amounts of body spray that can be overpowering.
- SLEEPING (AGAIN): When you finally get to sleep after years of night-wakings, you might find yourself lying awake worrying about your teen’s late-night outings. Their independence brings a whole new set of anxieties for parents.
In a heartbeat, you can see the toddler that used to be in your teenage child. It might be in the way they curl their hair or how they sleep with their mouths slightly open. Those fleeting glimpses of their younger selves remind us that while parenting can be tough, it’s also a beautiful journey.
So here’s to all parents juggling the highs and lows of raising children, both big and small. It’s a wild ride full of challenges, joy, and love.
