The transformative power of parenthood is undeniable. In my five years as a parent, I’ve experienced a significant shift in how I view the world. While I attribute some of this to the passage of time, much of my newfound perspective comes from the lessons I’ve learned through life itself. As I strive to nurture my two little ones into compassionate individuals, I want to share these vital lessons on kindness that I believe are essential for a fulfilling life.

1. Kindness is Free and Unconditional

The most important thing to remember is that kindness doesn’t cost a thing, and there are no prerequisites. Everyone, regardless of their actions, deserves kindness. Those who seem unkind often need it the most. Maybe they are battling issues we can’t see. A simple smile or a friendly greeting could make a world of difference to someone in need. So, let’s lead by example.

2. Don’t Expect Gratitude

When you show kindness, sometimes it may not be reciprocated or appreciated. This shouldn’t deter you. One negative interaction shouldn’t diminish your spirit. (Is “spirit” still a thing people say? I’m going with it.)

3. Goodness Comes Back Around

I genuinely believe that when you put positivity into the universe, it returns to you. It’s not a guarantee that every day will be perfect—some days will be downright challenging. But those tough moments make the joyful times even more precious.

4. Choose Kindness, Even When It’s Hard

There will be times when kindness feels like a chore. It’s okay to have days when you feel low and struggle to find the silver lining. On those days, take a break. It’s perfectly fine to relax on the couch in your pajamas for a bit. Acknowledge your feelings, regroup, and when you’re ready, get back out there. Sometimes, a taco is all the motivation you need, but find what works for you.

5. Embrace Your Imperfections

Mistakes are a part of being human, and there will be moments when you fall short in your kindness. What matters is how you respond to those moments. Always strive to be humble and apologize if necessary. Authenticity and sincerity can heal wounds.

While kindness may not always be returned, it’s crucial to remain steadfast. You might feel like just one small pearl in a vast ocean, but remember, there are countless others just like you. Together, these pearls create something truly beautiful. So go forth and spread your kindness.
