A recent survey of 2,000 pet owners revealed that 40% believe that the expenses associated with raising pets can rival, or even exceed, those incurred while raising children. This sentiment reflects the reality that while kids may face future education costs, pets come with their own set of financial demands, including daycare, grooming, and healthcare expenses that can accumulate rapidly.

Conducted by OnePoll in collaboration with MetLife and highlighted by People, the survey found that the average pet owner spends over $4,500 annually on their pets’ basic needs. A staggering 52% of participants admitted to spending more on their pets than on themselves, with many setting aside around $200 from each paycheck specifically for their furry companions. Among the most significant expenses are food, toys, flea and tick treatments, and medications, which surprisingly only cost about $60 less each year than their own medical needs.

Moreover, 61% of respondents acknowledged that owning a pet is more expensive than they initially thought, echoing the experiences of parents of human children. While many encountered unexpected costs like cleaning supplies and first aid kits tailored for pets, 74% indicated that financial concerns take a back seat as long as their pets remain healthy and happy. “For many pet owners, their pets are more than just ‘animals’ — they are family members,” commented Lisa Sanders, vice president of pet services at MetLife. “The joy pets bring is accompanied by financial strain, as many owners are willing to invest whatever it takes to ensure their pets’ well-being.”

Adopting a new family member—whether it’s a child or a pet—can be a significant financial commitment, yet the love and companionship they offer are truly priceless.
