The Great Smoky Mountains National Park holds the title of the most-visited national park in the United States for good reason. Spanning over 800 miles of trails, abundant forests, stunning waterfalls, and breathtaking views, this destination promises an unforgettable experience for everyone—from energetic toddlers to adventurous teens and even the discerning matriarch of the family.
Our family has explored this captivating region multiple times, and with each visit, our appreciation deepens. Here’s a rundown of our top attractions, dining options, and accommodations in the Smokies.
Gatlinburg, TN
Prepare yourself: a visit to Gatlinburg may lead to your children never wanting to leave. The vibrant streets are filled with pancake houses, souvenir shops, 4-D cinemas, arcades, museums, rides, and virtually anything that might entice you—and, more importantly, your children—to part with your cash.
We recommend the Greystone Lodge on the River for comfortable family suites that feature kitchenettes, dining areas, living spaces, and separate bedrooms for parents, as well as fun bunk beds for the kids, complete with their own television. The recently opened Courtyard Gatlinburg offers a stylish atmosphere and a welcoming staff.
For dining, we’re always up for a wait at Crockett’s Breakfast Camp, our favorite spot in town. Their massive breakfast portions served on oversized skillets are mouthwatering. While everything we’ve tried is delicious, their biscuits, thick pancakes, and delightful cinnamon rolls deserve special mention.
If you prefer to avoid long waits, the lesser-known New Orleans Sandwich Company is a must-visit. Their Po Boys and seafood gumbo are excellent, with generous servings. You can’t leave without visiting The Donut Friar, an eccentric donut shop known for its freshly made treats—my favorite being the Bavarian Cream. Pro tip: bring cash, as this shop doesn’t accept credit cards.
When it comes to attractions, Gatlinburg offers an abundance of choices. Tweens and teens will enjoy the Mysterious Mansion, an exhilarating haunted house experience. Ripley’s Aquarium is also a highlight, rivaling the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, so aim for a less crowded day to enjoy it fully. Additionally, the newly revamped Guinness World Records Adventure features numerous interactive games and exhibits that engage the entire family.
Taking the Aerial Tram up to Ober Gatlinburg is a family favorite. Here, you can go ice skating, visit a small zoo, or ride a thrilling mountain coaster.
Pigeon Forge, TN
Just a short drive from the park lies Pigeon Forge, an ideal base for your Smoky Mountain getaway, primarily due to Dollywood. Even if you’re not a Dolly Parton fan, this theme park offers an Appalachian Disney World vibe, with rides for all ages, fantastic entertainment, delicious food, and excellent shopping opportunities. Notably, Dollywood has won the Golden Ticket Award for best theme park food four times in the last seven years, making dining here as enjoyable as the rides.
Be sure to try the gooey cinnamon bread from the Grist Mill, and don’t miss the famous fried chicken sandwiches at Frannie’s Food Truck. For a hearty meal, Aunt Granny’s Restaurant offers a superb all-you-can-eat buffet.
Consider staying at Dollywood’s lovely DreamMore Resort for convenient shuttle service to the park and complimentary TimeSaver Passes for each guest, allowing for expedited entry to selected rides. The resort is family-oriented, featuring comfortable family suites, movie nights, live music, and crafting activities.
Splash Country, an adjacent waterpark, boasts numerous family-friendly slides, while Dolly Parton’s Stampede and Smoky Mountain Adventures dinner shows provide spectacular entertainment along with delicious four-course meals.
Sevierville, TN
While Sevierville may not be as renowned as its neighboring towns, it offers plenty of family fun. The Wilderness at the Smokies Waterpark Resort is a hit with my kids, featuring Tennessee’s largest indoor waterpark, along with outdoor pools and a Family Fun Center.
For a rainy day, the Rainforest Adventures Discovery Zoo is a hidden gem, housing over 600 animals, many of which are rare. Dining at the popular Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant is worth the wait, particularly for their chicken and dumplings and complimentary apple fritters. Don’t forget to check out the Apple Barn next door for souvenirs and fresh cider.
For a unique experience, enjoy a meal at English Mountain Trout Farm, where you’ll catch the fish that’s cooked for you. Additionally, horseback riding at Five Oaks Riding Stables offers a thrilling way to explore the Smokies, with options for all ages.
For an extraordinary experience, consider splurging on a Scenic Helicopter Tour, providing a thrilling aerial view of the Smoky Mountains. This activity was one of the highlights of our vacation, and I highly recommend it.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
While the surrounding towns are brimming with activities, don’t overlook the park itself. There are countless ways to appreciate the stunning scenery, whether by foot, raft, or car.
Drive through Cades Cove, an 11-mile one-way loop where you may spot black bears, deer, and other wildlife. Make sure to grab a guide at the entrance to enhance your experience. Another scenic drive is the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a 5.5-mile loop known for bear sightings, especially at dawn or dusk.
For a family-friendly hike, try the Laurel Falls Trail, a paved 2.6-mile round trip leading to an impressive waterfall. On your way, stop by the Sugarlands Visitor Center for a brief film about the park’s history.
Consider embarking on a whitewater rafting adventure with Rafting in the Smokies, featuring family-friendly floats and thrilling Class III and IV rapids for older kids. Expert guides ensure safety while providing an exhilarating experience.
Alternatively, a guided nature walk with A Walk in the Woods introduces expert guides who can tailor hikes for various skill levels, making it easier to learn and navigate the area safely.
To avoid crowds, consider visiting during off-peak months like May, September, or early November. Regardless of when you go, there’s plenty to see and do. Enjoy your visit and keep an eye out for bears!
