As a parent, I’ve endured countless antics that could easily fall under the umbrella of “kids will be kids.” Yet, there are moments when I reflect on the trials of parenthood and think about how I’d like to turn the tables when my kids reach adulthood. Here’s a lighthearted list of ideas that might just give them a taste of their own medicine:
- Stroll into the bathroom while my daughter is using it and demand a popsicle.
- Watch them labor for an hour over dinner after a tiring day, only to “accidentally” drop it on the floor and request mac and cheese instead.
- Wake my son at the crack of dawn and ask if I can borrow his iPad.
- Casually inform my daughter’s doctor about her occasional colorful language while helping her kids with homework.
- Use their bathroom during a gathering and loudly call out for assistance.
- Show up at Thanksgiving after they’ve spent hours cooking and insist on a peanut butter sandwich.
- Playfully pull down my daughter’s swimsuit in front of her friends and chuckle about it with her spouse for years to come.
- Reach under the bathroom door and ask if they can see my fingers, then describe the amusing sounds I hear from the other side.
- Inquire if I can join them on their lap while they are on the toilet.
- Have an unfortunate incident in my underwear and leave them on the bathroom floor.
- Use their facilities and forget to flush.
- Ask them for financial help daily.
- Rouse them at 3 a.m. and then act annoyed for the rest of the day.
- At the pool, ask them every few minutes to watch a trick or fix my goggles.
- Have a loud disagreement with my son about whether or not he can smell my fart while shopping.
- Toss my daughter’s phone into the toilet and blame it on the family pet.
- Offer to assist them with house cleaning, only to spend the entire time in the restroom pretending to be busy.
- Playfully push on my son’s midsection and ask if he’s expecting a child.
- Toss a toy on the floor of the car while on the freeway and insist on getting it back, repeating the process several times.
- Plead for a trip to McDonald’s and then create a mess in the drive-thru.
- Scatter granola in the backseat of their vehicle.
- While dining, glance at the person next to me and eat my booger.
- Leave a surprise in their bathtub.
- Break something valuable in their home, then feign distress and ask for comfort.
- Drive them to the edge of frustration and then request a hug.
Now, let’s be clear: I wouldn’t actually carry out any of these antics on my children in the future. As a parent, maturity and understanding come first, but dreaming up these scenarios is undeniably entertaining!
