Welcome to our week-by-week pregnancy guide! We’re excited to share everything you need to know about your journey, from symptoms and fetal development to your changing body and upcoming appointments. Let’s dive into what’s happening in week 22.
Your Body at Week 22 of Pregnancy
Dealing with Sensitive Gums?
Are your gums feeling swollen or bleeding more than usual? Don’t panic—this is a normal response to increased hormones and blood flow during pregnancy. It’s a good idea to schedule a dental check-up in your second trimester to prevent any infections. In the meantime, keep up with flossing, brush your teeth twice daily with a soft brush, and try warm salt water rinses to ease discomfort.
Traveling by Air?
According to the Mayo Clinic, flying is generally safe until around week 36 of your pregnancy, but it’s wise to consult your OB before making any travel plans. While air travel is permissible, be sure to stay hydrated, wear your seatbelt under your belly, walk around frequently to improve circulation, and consider wearing compression socks. Also, avoid gassy foods beforehand, as gas can expand at high altitudes.
Your Baby at Week 22
At this stage, your little one weighs about 1 pound and measures approximately 11 inches long—roughly the size of that sleeve of cookies you might have enjoyed during your last binge-watch session. Although your baby’s eyelids are still fused, they can sense light; if you shine a flashlight on your belly, your baby may turn away! The development of tear ducts and eyebrows is also underway. Currently, your baby has a wrinkly appearance, but that will soon change as they start to build fat to keep warm. For now, the protective layer of vernix caseosa acts as a cozy winter coat, keeping them snug inside.
Symptoms and Health at Week 22
Feeling a Bit Clumsy?
Pregnancy hormones are relaxing your joints to prep for labor, which can lead to some unexpected clumsiness. With your body’s new weight distribution, you may feel off-balance. Stay mindful of your surroundings, especially on slippery or uneven surfaces.
Hemorrhoids
These are essentially varicose veins in the rectal area and can be aggravated by factors like constipation and prolonged standing. To ease discomfort, consider warm baths with baking soda, witch hazel pads to reduce inflammation, and a diet high in fiber.
Breast Changes
You might notice your breasts feeling fuller and larger without the soreness you experienced in early pregnancy. They are gearing up for milk production, potentially growing by a cup size or more by the time you deliver.
Pregnancy Heartburn
Heartburn can be a common issue during the second and third trimesters due to hormones that slow digestion and relax esophageal muscles. To mitigate heartburn, steer clear of spicy or greasy foods, eat smaller meals more frequently, avoid lying down right after eating, and elevate your head while sleeping.
Aches and Pains
As your belly expands, you may feel some back or joint pain due to the hormone relaxin, which helps your body adapt. Gentle stretching, staying active, using a belly support band, and maintaining good posture can help relieve some of this discomfort.
Managing Twin Pregnancy
If you’re expecting twins, they may not weigh a pound each yet, but carrying them can still be quite the workout! Be sure to rest whenever you can. Additionally, you might notice some swelling in your body due to increased fluid retention, so don’t be surprised if your shoes feel a bit tight—slippers may become your best friend.
