Welcome to our week-by-week pregnancy guide! Here, we provide insights on what to expect during your pregnancy journey, from symptoms and your baby’s development to changes in your body and upcoming appointments. Let’s dive into what’s happening at 11 weeks.
Your Body at 11 Weeks Pregnant
Hair Marvels
Are you noticing that your hair is looking fuller and shinier? It’s not just your imagination! Many expectant mothers experience a boost in hair quality during pregnancy, likely due to heightened estrogen levels affecting hair growth. Enjoy this moment, but remember that postpartum hair loss is a reality, so relish those luscious locks while they last.
Unexpected Hair Growth
In addition to fabulous hair on your head, you might notice some unwanted hair growth elsewhere—yes, even on your belly and face. Don’t worry; this is a common side effect of pregnancy. Embrace it or consider regular appointments with your beautician. Your little one is already helping you make new connections!
Planning a Babymoon?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by nausea and fatigue, know that many women find relief as they approach the end of the first trimester. The second trimester is a wonderful time for a much-deserved babymoon! Always check with your healthcare provider about travel, and steer clear of areas with Zika outbreaks. If you’re thinking of spa treatments, remember to avoid saunas, hot tubs, and unlicensed massage therapists. However, lounging by the pool is perfectly safe for you and your baby.
Glowing or Breaking Out?
At 11 weeks, your hormones might be making your skin behave like a teenager’s. If you’re experiencing breakouts, it’s due to increased oil production. Fortunately, your complexion will return to normal post-pregnancy. In the meantime, stick to gentle cleansers and avoid heavy makeup to keep your skin calm.
Nuchal Translucency Test
Depending on your doctor, you may have a nuchal translucency (NT) test scheduled between now and week 14. This ultrasound measures fluid at the back of your baby’s neck and can indicate potential issues, but it’s not definitive. If results show any concerns, your healthcare provider will discuss further testing options. If all goes well, it’s a perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of your developing baby!
Your Baby at 11 Weeks Pregnant
At this stage, your baby is about 2.5 inches long and weighs around an ounce—roughly the size of a cocktail shrimp. All major organs and systems are in place, and tiny features like nail beds and hair follicles are forming. While their sex can’t be determined just yet, your little one has developed fingers, toes, and even baby nipples!
Your Health and Symptoms at 11 Weeks Pregnant
Hello, Doctor!
From now until week 28, you’ll have monthly check-ins with your healthcare provider to monitor both your health and your baby’s. To minimize time spent in waiting rooms, try scheduling appointments early in the morning or just after lunch. Bring along snacks and your favorite podcasts to stay entertained.
Weight Concerns?
Don’t stress if you haven’t gained weight yet; many women experience difficulty keeping food down during this stage. Weigh-ins during the first trimester can vary widely—some may even lose weight due to morning sickness. The average weight gain during this period is just 3 to 5 pounds, and as your appetite returns, those numbers will start to rise. Aim for a total weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds by the end of your pregnancy.
Twins?
If you’re getting your first trimester scan this week, you might discover that you’re expecting twins! Modern ultrasound technology has made it rare for a second baby to be overlooked. If you find out you’re having twins, congratulations! While it can be both exciting and overwhelming, take heart: you’ll have more frequent check-ups to ensure both babies are thriving.
