11 Ways Motherhood Mirrors The Walking Dead

During my mother’s visit this week, we settled in for a little TV time after putting my son to bed. I plopped down on the couch, heavily pregnant, and turned on the latest episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead. My mom watched in disbelief, exclaiming, “This is your favorite show? Isn’t it all about zombies? How can you enjoy something like that?”

Oh, sweet mother, the parallels between motherhood and The Walking Dead are uncanny. Here are some striking similarities:

  1. Once your little ones transform into “Walkers,” they demand your undivided attention. Neglecting them only leads to chaos and calamity.
  2. You often find yourself ravenous, uncertain of when you’ll eat next, yet your focus is diverted by urgent, life-altering scenarios. Eventually, you grab a snack while managing the crisis.
  3. Insatiable beings are constantly reaching for you, aiming to nibble at your sanity, if not your flesh.
  4. Personal grooming and fashion become secondary to the pressing needs of practicality, resilience, and sheer survival.
  5. Intimacy can be a delightful escape—if you have the stamina—but it must occur quickly, quietly, and preferably behind an obstruction to avoid being spotted by the “Walkers.”
  6. Unlikely alliances form in the heat of the moment. That dad down the hall, once a stranger, suddenly becomes your ally in navigating this chaotic world, and there’s no shame in that.
  7. Foul odors that would have previously sent you running are now hardly perceptible.
  8. Sometimes, things get so chaotic that you simply have to look away to maintain your sanity.
  9. When agitated, your “Walkers” can emit noises that rival the most feral of animals.
  10. You might feel like you have finally established a routine, only for the “Walkers” to evolve, turning everything upside down.
  11. If you slip up, you can be sure there will be critics—whether it’s the Judgmental Moms or a cast member on “The Talking Dead”—analyzing your every move.

In summary, navigating motherhood can sometimes feel like surviving a zombie apocalypse. The challenges, the strange alliances, and the constant juggling act can leave you feeling like you’re in a horror show. Nevertheless, it’s all part of the wild ride of parenting.
