Each year, my family takes the opportunity to host Thanksgiving at our home, and it’s a tradition to gather around the table and share what we’re thankful for. As we prepare to indulge in one of the year’s most substantial meals, it’s amusing how gratitude for food often takes center stage. Beyond the usual acknowledgments of health, family, and shelter, I have a unique list of 11 things I genuinely appreciate this Thanksgiving.

  1. I’m thankful for children who sleep in until at least 8 a.m. Even better are those little ones who, upon waking, head straight to the family room, tune into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, pour themselves a glass of chocolate milk, and don’t seem to notice I’m missing until at least 9 a.m. Pure bliss!
  2. I’m grateful that we steer clear of any Turkey Trots or 5K runs on Thanksgiving. While I admire those who choose to jog or run on a day dedicated to food and relaxation, I find joy in the freedom to lounge on the couch instead.
  3. Let’s not forget about wine. Yes, the larger bottles are especially appreciated.
  4. I am thankful for family members who engage with our kids during the festivities. Whether it’s a game of football, a round of Uno, or even video games, these relatives help keep the children entertained while I navigate the complexities of preparing a massive feast. They could be teaching my kids to launch rockets for all I care, as long as they keep them occupied while I handle the turkey.
  5. I’m thankful for a peaceful holiday without sibling rivalries. The absence of fighting among my kids is a rare but cherished blessing.
  6. In the same spirit, I’m grateful that the adults manage to stay civil. It’s a miracle when everyone can enjoy the day without squabbles.
  7. Any day that doesn’t require a bathing suit is one to be thankful for. This is especially true when so much food is involved—let’s face it, the Fourth of July doesn’t hold a candle to this.
  8. Did I mention wine?
  9. I’m grateful for the cleanup crew that springs into action post-meal. Those who clear every plate and glass, transforming my kitchen into a spotless area in no time are true heroes. I could almost twirl them in appreciation.
  10. I’m thankful that we only host Thanksgiving. This holiday is enough work on its own without adding more to my plate.
  11. And of course, I’m grateful for the leftovers. They are a delicious reminder of the feast long after the day has ended.
