As I reminisce about simpler times, I can’t help but think of the iconic words of Jessie Spano, “There’s no time! There’s never any time!” And while Jessie was just navigating high school pressures, motherhood presents an entirely different challenge. The moment my children wake up—and sometimes even while they sleep—my time is consumed by their endless needs. The days of spontaneous choices and leisurely pursuits feel like a distant memory. So, let’s explore the things I would love to do if I could reclaim some of that lost time:
-
Dive Into a Novel
I crave the experience of immersing myself in a book devoid of illustrations or whimsical animals. A hefty tome filled with intricate plots, adult themes, and character development would be a dream. I want to lose track of time, absorbed in a narrative until my chair becomes uncomfortable and I forget my next meal. -
Groom My Eyebrows
The state of my eyebrows is less than ideal. In the right lighting, they resemble two unruly caterpillars preparing for a dance. A little self-care in this department is long overdue. -
Binge a New Series on Streaming
While I could technically do this, the aftermath of staying up late watching something like “The Crown” only to be greeted by a wide-awake toddler at sunrise is not a scenario I want to create. -
Enjoy a Long Brunch with Friends
I miss those carefree gatherings with my friends where time didn’t dictate our fun. Those leisurely brunches that flowed into afternoons filled with mimosas and laughter now feel impossible, as I have to return home to tackle the chaos that awaits. -
Take a Solitary Walk
I fondly remember the days when I could wander aimlessly for hours, enjoying the fresh air and allowing my mind to clear. Now, my schedule is tightly packed, and my thoughts are often clouded by the demands of parenting. -
Explore a New Hobby
There’s a wealth of research suggesting that learning new skills contributes to a longer, healthier life. I’d love to take up painting, or perhaps even try my hand at rock climbing, but the time I’d dedicate to these pursuits often feels like time I should spend cleaning up after my kids. -
Get Lost in the Internet
The digital world offers endless rabbit holes to explore. One minute, I could be researching home organization tips, and the next, I’m knee-deep in celebrity gossip. Unfortunately, those hours are better utilized for personal hygiene or other pressing tasks, like getting my kids to eat something other than cheese. -
Cook an Elaborate Meal for My Partner and Myself
Spending hours in the kitchen preparing a gourmet three-course meal sounds delightful, but my daily schedule only allows for quick dinners. Unless my husband is a fan of toast as a starter, this dream remains just that—a dream. -
Connect with Distant Friends
I miss my high school and college friends. Social media keeps us connected, but nothing beats a real conversation. If only I had endless time to catch up without my kids causing chaos in the background. -
Reflect on My Life’s Purpose
I often ponder the bigger questions: What am I truly meant to do beyond work and parenting? What legacy do I wish to leave? Why is my oven timer going off while I try to figure all this out?
Someday, my children will be grown, and I can finally indulge in these activities. Until then, I’ll keep this list as a reminder of my aspirations.
