10 Reasons I Appreciate Daycare

When my first child arrived, the idea of daycare felt overwhelming. My instinct was to protect my little one from the outside world. However, the financial reality hit hard — the cost of daycare was similar to a full paycheck, making it feel pointless to work simply to cover childcare expenses. I could manage the chaos of staying home… or so I thought!

The first year with one child was manageable; there were quiet moments and special bonding time. But the arrival of my second child complicated things. Suddenly, I had two little ones with different nap times and feeding schedules. Life became a whirlwind of juggling responsibilities. Then came my third child, and survival mode kicked in. With three kids under six, our household transformed into a chaotic hub of activity. They could sense candy stashes and fought over the smallest things — even socks!

When the opportunity to work part-time arose, I jumped at it. I enrolled my kids in daycare without hesitation and walked out like a champion, relieved that I could now reclaim a bit of my sanity. Here are ten reasons I’ve come to appreciate daycare:

  1. I Stay Connected
I adore my children, but after spending so much time together, I cherish the chance to have some distance. Their daycare has an app that allows me to check in on their day, see photos, and receive updates on their activities. I get to enjoy their experiences without the constant need for supervision.
  2. Exhausted Kids = Happy Parents
They come home just in time for dinner, tired and ready for bed. It’s a parenting win!
  3. A Clean Home and Hot Coffee
With the kids at daycare, my home remains tidy, and I can savor my coffee without interruptions. For the first time since 2011, I can relish a clean living room without the chaos of toys scattered everywhere.
  4. Social Interaction
Finding playmates for my kids was tougher than I anticipated. Moving to a new state meant I had to build a social circle from scratch. Now, they have friends to interact with regularly, which eases my worries about them becoming social misfits.
  5. Learning and Growth
While they may bring home silly myths, my children are consistently learning new things. Their vocabulary expands weekly, and their grasp of math and science has surpassed my own teaching abilities.
  6. Excitement for Daycare
Each week brings new themes and activities, creating excitement about their day ahead. There are no battles to get them into the car; they eagerly hop in without complaints.
  7. Regaining Balance
By dedicating time to my work, I return home rejuvenated. I’m no longer overwhelmed trying to juggle my interests with my kids’ needs, allowing me to be present and engaged during our time together.
  8. Cost-Effective Care
Living in Colorado, daycare costs are competitive with hiring a babysitter. The expense is only marginally higher than a sitter, but daycare offers structured learning and socialization that a typical babysitter may not provide.
  9. Busy Kids
Daycare is the perfect place for them to expend their energy. It’s a relief not to have to clean up after their busy activities!
  10. Valuing Our Time Together
This may sound odd, but the time apart makes me value our moments together even more. Being home constantly can lead to burnout, and daycare offers the necessary balance. My kids are eager to explore, and daycare provides an avenue for that exploration while I stay their primary caregiver.

I’m grateful for the time I spent at home during their early years. However, it became clear that they were ready to venture out and discover the world beyond our four walls. Daycare has become a supportive ally in their growth, preparing them for the adventures ahead.
