In a world where extravagant lifestyles often steal the spotlight, a recent article in The New York Post titled, “I Get A Wife Bonus And I Deserve It, So STFU,” caught my attention. It featured a wealthy woman who, due to her role as a stay-at-home parent, receives a percentage of her husband’s annual bonus to indulge in high-end fashion. While some may find this outrageous, it’s ultimately their financial choice. Personally, I’m a stay-at-home mom too, but my bonuses are far from designer labels. Instead, they embody the little joys and privileges of my daily life. Here are ten things I’m thrilled to call my “Wife Bonuses”:
- Clean Water: I have the luxury of fresh water flowing right from my tap! It’s like magic, and my kids only seem to know about thirst at midnight when they decide to test my patience.
- Shelter: A solid roof over our heads is something I deeply appreciate. Especially during those long Colorado winters and the storms that come with them. Thanks to my industrious husband, we have a warm home to retreat to.
- Impulse Buys at Target: There’s nothing quite like the exhilarating rush of snagging a $15 shirt I didn’t need, which looks like a feeble attempt to reclaim my youth. It’s a small thrill that brings me joy.
- Footwear: I have actual shoes! And while I didn’t earn them through traditional means, I certainly work hard cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and raising our kids. It’s a different kind of earning, but it counts!
- Access to Healthcare: I can take my children to the doctor on the same day if they need medicine. The ability to afford healthcare is invaluable and something I never take for granted.
- Well-rounded Kids: My children understand that my self-worth isn’t tied to my appearance. Although I admit, I do invest effort into looking decent and keeping up with personal grooming.
- The Privilege of Staying Home: It’s a luxury to be present for my children, even when they challenge my sanity. Having the choice to stay home is a gift I cherish, even on the tough days.
- Empowerment in Decision-Making: I am the decision-maker in our household. From meals to wardrobe choices, I wield a certain power that I try to handle with care. My search history is a testament to my many decisions!
- Quality Clothing for My Kids: I enjoy dressing my children in the best consignment finds. They don’t care about labels; they just want clothes that twirl and shine like the sun.
- The Ultimate “Wife Bonus”: While some might argue that a Birkin bag is the pinnacle of a wife’s perks, I believe my true bonus is teaching my kids that material things don’t define their worth. Life is challenging enough; we shouldn’t complicate it by getting caught up in “stuff.”
