As I set down a book that failed to engage me, I couldn’t help but feel frustrated. I had picked it up, thinking it would be an enjoyable summer read set in my beloved state of Maine, but the characters were dull, and the plot was lifeless. After reaching a third of the way through, I decided it was time to move on. As a mother of three energetic kids, my reading time is precious, and I refuse to waste it on books that don’t spark joy or excitement.
In my pre-mom days, I often felt compelled to finish every book I started, believing I owed it to the author or myself. Now, with the whirlwind of motherhood demanding my attention, I’ve come to recognize many things I once tolerated that I simply won’t accept anymore:
- Poorly Written Books: You have my attention for a limited number of pages, so don’t squander them with random details like what’s inside someone’s beach bag.
- Subpar Coffee: While coffee can be subjective, “bad coffee” means anything that doesn’t meet my standards. In my younger days, I settled for cheap brews. Now, I need coffee that fuels my day—smooth and strong, please!
- Snobbery: I’m not impressed by material possessions or status symbols. If you’re kind and open-minded, let’s chat, regardless of your background.
- Rigid Jeans: Regular jeans that lack stretch are a no-go. I want comfort and flexibility, not something that restricts me like an old-school Mean Girl.
- Inexpensive Undergarments: After carrying twins and another child, I’ve learned that I need quality support. I’m willing to forgo some trendy items to invest in reliable undergarments.
- Artificial Ingredients: I prefer real food over fake substitutes. Life is too short for imitations, and I want to nourish my body with genuine flavors, except of course if allergies are a concern.
- Cleaning for Perfection: Unlike my grandmother and mother, who were meticulous about cleaning, I refuse to waste my time on tasks that go unnoticed. My focus is on enjoying life, whether that means dancing with my kids or diving into a good book.
- Body Image Issues: Having three kids has shifted my perspective on body image. I spent too much time worrying about my appearance in the past; now, I embrace my body for all it does, and I want my daughters to learn the same.
- Guilt Over Others’ Happiness: It’s impossible to keep everyone happy at once, especially in a busy household. I’ve learned to prioritize my own well-being, realizing I can’t be responsible for everyone else’s feelings.
- Uncomfortable Footwear: I used to prioritize style over comfort when shoe shopping. Now, as a busy mom, I need shoes that allow me to keep up with my children without sacrificing comfort.
Motherhood has profoundly reshaped my life and helped me establish clear boundaries. While I may endure the chaos of children’s shows blaring in the car or kids snuggling into my bed, I take pride in knowing what I won’t tolerate.
