When it comes to parenting, there are definitely moments I prefer to enjoy solo—like showering, road trips, or tackling household chores. It’s no secret that some tasks are simply easier without the little ones around. However, there are countless experiences that become far more enriching and delightful with my children by my side. Based on my journey, here are ten activities that I find are infinitely better when I share them with my kids:
-
Theme Parks
Taking my first child, Lily, to an amusement park when she was just 3 was an eye-opener. I underestimated how much joy she would get from the experience. Watching her face light up repeatedly was a treasure. Over the years, we’ve explored numerous parks like Disney and Universal, and despite the usual hassles, the excitement these outings generate is unparalleled. -
Dance Parties
Every now and then, we transform our living room into a dance floor, pushing aside the furniture and cranking up some high-energy music. Watching my kids dance, especially when they’re uninhibited by self-consciousness, brings pure joy. -
Coloring Together
While adult coloring books have gained popularity, sitting down with my kids to fill in their coloring pages is surprisingly relaxing. I can’t count the meaningful conversations we’ve shared over crayons and colored pencils. Initially, I used it as a distraction, but joining them creates a Zen-like bonding experience. -
Family Movie Nights
Admittedly, this is more about my enjoyment than theirs. When the family is engrossed in a film, I often find myself dozing off halfway through. Knowing my kids are entertained and safe allows me to relax completely. It’s been ages since I’ve made it through a kids’ movie without a nap, but that cozy snooze is unbeatable. -
Beach Days
While many people dread the beach due to sand and crowds, once my kids outgrew the toddler stage, I found it to be one of the easiest places to parent. A little sunscreen, a cooler full of snacks, and they’re free to explore. The joy they find in the sand and surf is a beautiful sight. -
Fireworks Displays
Some kids may shy away from the loud sounds of fireworks, but my children adore them. I guess they inherited my love for this spectacle. Watching their faces light up amidst the explosions creates a magical atmosphere that I cherish. -
Gift Unwrapping
Is there anything more delightful than witnessing a child rip open a present? I have countless photos capturing their expressions of surprise and joy as they discover gifts they longed for or even those they didn’t know they wanted. The sequence of emotions—curiosity, anticipation, surprise, and pure delight—is priceless. -
Reading Together
There’s something special about reading a story to a child nestled beside you. Although my kids are getting older, I still treasure these moments. Even my 12-year-old enjoys being read to, and diving into an author’s world through vivid illustrations and engaging words feels like a family adventure. -
“Coffee” Outings
I love taking my kids out for “coffee” dates. I indulge in my caffeine fix while they enjoy hot cocoa. These outings provide a chance for one-on-one time, allowing me to witness their growth and changes over the years. They are some of my most cherished memories with them. -
Bedtime Talks
While I dread the bedtime routine, the conversations that unfold while tucking my kids in are invaluable. The late-night discussions often lead to profound questions about life, making those moments incredibly special.
While everyone has their own unique experiences with their children, it’s essential to embrace the joyful activities that make parenting a delight. These moments are fleeting, and I know I will miss them dearly when my kids grow up.
